CAPE HATTERAS, NORTH CAROLINA
located at the very east tip of N.C this group of flat islands are long & narrow, lies well off the mainland running 130 miles from Duck to Ocracoke Isl.Some
hills are as high as 100ft. Most islands are located 50 miles off shore.The 3 main islands are (bodie) to north
(hatteras) central & (Ocracoke) to south reached only by ferry.Most of hatteras is undeveloped. Nags head is located
approx 50 miles to the north.C.H located near 35.22N x 75.52W
LAST AFFECTED 2005 Sept 15th Hurricane Ophelia weakens as it passes approx 40 miles east of Cape Hatteras with 75mph winds moving slowly away with minimal damage..

Hazards & notes of interest>>>flooding in sounds can be a problem with N.E winds,in 1999 Dennis which brushed well to the east left 5 ft of
standing water on Ocracoke island. Many visitors here during summer & only one way out to north & one south.
Traffic evacuation can be a huge problem. Route 12 washed away during Hurricane Isabel in 2003 residents claim a bridge is needed or the road will wash away again.
