UPDATE BY: Jim Williams...We have invest 94L in the East Atlantic located on the map below that NHC is keeping their eyes on. This system keeps getting better organized & could become a named storm before moving into cooler waters while headed towards Spain. The current water temps are right at the threshold of 78 degrees so this may have a slight chance.
A recent press release suggest's different types of El Nino's form based on the location of the warmer waters according to climatologists at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The El Nino potential has been the big story going into the 2009 Hurricane Season with predictions of an average to below average amount of named storms for the Atlantic basin. This new type of El Niņo, known as El Niņo Modoki (from the Japanese meaning "similar, but different"), forms in the Central Pacific, rather than the Eastern Pacific as the typical El Niņo event does. Warming in the Central Pacific is associated with a higher storm frequency and a greater potential for making landfall along the Gulf coast and the coast of Central America. We have seen similar events to this like in 2004 when Florida had an active hurricane season. Will that happen this year? I am still holding to 13 named storms with South Florida at high risk for a named storm. You can see my high risk cities on my predictions page
